This is a 1930s era day dress made in a dark navy blue, almost black, rayon fabric with white polka dots.  The dress has a deep V shaped neckline with shirt-type collar, long full cut sleeves with button closure cuffs, faux slant pockets at either side, and is made in a below the knee length.  The dress is quite structured using seaming through the bodice and the skirt.  It has a seam defined waist and is constructed so that the skirt falls in drapes and has a deep box pleat at the centre front.  There is a row of smocked tucking across the shoulders.  The dress has no closures and simply fits over the head.  The dress is unlined.

Sizing: No size is indicated, and although this should fit a medium size, please note the following measurements for fit:

Shoulders:  17” across from shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam Sleeves:  23” long from the shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeve inseam:  16 1/2”

Bust:  46” around, taken under the armpits, meant to fall somewhat loosely

Waist:  37” around, uncinched

Hips:  44” around

Length:  46”, measured flat

Condition: It is in very good condition except for a small fray type tear at the left shoulder seam, really minor (see last extreme close-up photo).  The neckline could maybe use a proper pressing.  Otherwise, there is no pronounced wear, tear, soiling or staining.  This dress has been well kept and stored over the last 85 or so years.

This is a very nice example of a 1930s day dress - lovely style, wonderful polka dots!
